How to Grow Your Social Media Following
Plus Detailed Tip Sheet to Download
We’ve already talked about the importance of using social media in your business marketing, so automatically the next question is, “HOW do I grow my social media following?” This is one of the top questions that populate when you Google social media for business. So, clearly, how to grow your following is something that is really important to businesses.
You might think that this doesn’t apply to you, but it’s 2018, and EVERYONE is using social media. Whether you realize it or not, your business has been talked about on social media in some way or another, whether from a review a customer or client has given on their own page to photos they’ve posted of your store, product, or service, you’re ALREADY on social! You might as well get some benefit from it by focusing on growing your following to spread the news to your target audience.
There isn’t really a ‘one size fits all approach,’ because everyone uses social in a different way, for different purposes, even in the same industry (just take a look at Wendy’s infamous Twitter Account and compare it to something like McDonald’s), and even then, each social media platform has their own rules so while your branding is consistent across the various channels, you wouldn’t exactly use the same exact post across multiple platforms—well, you could, but they aren’t likely to have the impact that you’re looking for.
Here’s the key takeaway: the following number DOES NOT MATTER.
Not one bit.
We can get caught up in the numbers but they truly don’t matter. Let’s say you have 200,000 followers on your account but only 2 people are consistently engaging (either through likes, shares, or comments), then your follower number doesn’t mean anything other than at one point they interacted with your page by clicking the button to follow you. It doesn’t mean that they even SAW your post. On the other hand, if you have 300 followers, and you have 30-40 people consistently engaging and commenting on your posts, then that means you have a MUCH higher engagement rate, which in turn means that the social media platform will PROMOTE your post so that it reaches more people beyond your close followers—which in turn means you hopefully get even MORE engagement!
What does this mean? It means that instead of focusing on how high that follower number is, focus more on cultivating a following of people who are authentically interested, engaged, and loyal to your brand, because at the end of the day, this translates to more profitability.
So how do you do this?
By staying consistent to your brand through visual messaging and by creating a CONVERSATION with your audience that encourages them to engage.
If you aren’t consistent with the branding/content that you put out, if you’re visually all over the place, if you only write posts about your products or business that are one sided and don’t encourage a conversation, your social media efforts will fall flat and you will not grow long term. Full stop.
I want to be crystal clear here: consistency and conversation are ESSENTIAL to the long term growth of your social media platforms. It won’t happen overnight (unless you’re one of the incredibly lucky ones), and it really shouldn’t if you’re doing this the right way, but you should start to see a consistent incline of growth if you do these things correctly. Social media platforms, like Facebook and Instagram, are so insanely saturated (over 1 billion people active on Facebook and around 700 million on Instagram), which means that its almost impossible to be seen if you don’t have a super engaged following.
